World’s Greatest Dad – The Movie
When I saw that a movie was coming out titled, WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, starring Robin Williams, I had visions of Mrs. Doubtfire & figured this will be a “light fare” film with fall of out of your seat comedy. I was completely wrong.
World’s Greatest Dad, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait (yes, that guy from Police Academy), is a different kind of movie than I am used to seeing. Let me be clear – it is a very dark and bizarre film, even morbid at times, so you should know what to expect if you are going to see this film. Consequently, it is an interesting & original story with good acting. Robin Williams, an unsuccessful writer & bored high school poetry teacher, tries hard as the “world’s greatest dad” to find a connection or bond with an extremely challenging & disturbed teenage son. It is not a kid friendly movie, but I feel that dads of all kinds (especially with teenagers) would appreciate this film. If I had to rate it on a scale of 1 – 10, my grade would be a 7 – a good movie, but not great.
Overall, the film takes some interesting turns, but ends up where I expected it to be. World’s Greatest Dad gets very positive reviews, especially from two movie critics I really admire, Ben Lyons & Ben Mankewicz of At The Movies. The movie’s website provides a full synopsis, movie trailer, critic reviews, and a listing of theater locations. In NYC, the film is currently playing at the Cinema Village on East 12th Street OR you can catch it on cable’s on-demand channel.
